Dramatic, rare ‘A’ for ‘V’ Sovereign Error!

One of the great Australian Sovereign rarities, known by a handful of examples, this dramatic Queen Victoria Error type features an inverted ‘A’ for the ‘V’ in ‘Victoria’!

Although there are many Queen Victoria Sovereign varieties, there are very few Error types – and none defined by a blunder as glaring as this! Quite likely to be the simple mistake of an inattentive die-setter, the 1880S Young Head Shield Sovereign presented here features an obverse inscription where an upside down ‘A’ has been employed for the ‘V’ in ‘Victoria’! If only for the dramatic nature of the error, this distinctive type would be hotly pursued – but then there’s the issue of rarity.

Quality control at Australian branches of the Royal Mint was excellent – as exemplified by the lack of Australian Sovereign Error types. Although the Sydney Mint’s 1880S Young Head Shield Gold Sovereign 'Inverted A for V' Error slipped through the system, it seems certain that the fault was quickly discovered. Known by a tiny number of examples, this key type appears on the market at extremely infrequent intervals.

Highly sought after, regardless of the quality, we have one example of this stunning Error in an exceptional state of preservation. Graded by leading independent 3rd party coin verifier Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) at AU55, you must miss this golden opportunity.
