A compelling combination of beauty, history and scarcity, we are delighted to present genuine silver coins of the Ancient Roman Emperor Vespasian – the tenth of the famous ‘Twelve Caesars’ and founder of the Flavian Dynasty.
Serving under a succession of emperors – Caligula, Claudius and Nero – Vespasian rose to prominence due to his military achievements. Playing a key role during the invasion of Britain in 43AD, Vespasian secured evermore important political positions, ultimately becoming the governor of Roman Africa. In 66AD, he was selected to quash the Jewish rebellion in Judaea, and he was still in the Holy Land in 68AD when word arrived of Nero’s overthrow and suicide. Vespasian knew that this was his moment. Whilst his son, Titus, completed the subjugation of the Jews, Vespasian gathered his forces and headed for Rome.
Nero’s demise had left the empire in chaos, and three men claimed the throne in quick succession – Galba, Otho and Vitellius. It was Vitellius who suffered defeat at the hands of Vespasian, who then became the last to rule in what is known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Reigning for ten years, Vespasian stabilised the empire both economically and politically before his death due to natural causes in 79AD. Nearly 2,000 years later, the coins of Vespasian are all scarce to rare.
Bearing the strong, distinctive portrait of the emperor upon the obverse, we have a small number of Vespasian silver denarii in Fine to Very Fine condition.
