A genuine coin from one of the greatest figures of medieval European history, we are delighted to present the silver โ€˜Wire Moneyโ€™ of Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov (1596-1645) โ€“ known as Michael I, and the first ruler of Russia from the famous House of Romanov!

Having ruled for nearly 40 years, the death of Ivan the Terrible in 1584 represented a major turning point in Russian history. Having accidentally killed his son & original heir to the throne in a fit of rage, Ivan left the fate of his empire to his retiring and possibly intellectually disabled younger son, Feodor. Feodorโ€™s brief rule was controlled by others, and when he died, Russia was plunged into chaos and civil war, exacerbated by famine and disease โ€“ known as the โ€˜Time of Troublesโ€™.

The civil strife only came to an end with the election as tsar of the 16-year-old Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov โ€“ known to the West as Michael I. The young Tsar was expected to fail, but his reign brought not only peace at home, but also saw the end of international conflicts, and expansion to the east. Michael I is remembered as the founder of one of Russiaโ€™s great dynasties, with the Romanovs ruling until Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown during the 1917 Russian Revolution.

An authentic artefact of the reign of this crucial figure, the Silver Wire Money of Tsar Michael I is a must-have for any collector with an interest in European history โ€“ or, indeed, the history of coin production. A fascinating window into the past, Wire Money is known as such because of the method of production of the blanks.

Firstly, Silver Thalers were imported from European kingdoms to the west and then melted down. The silver was subsequently formed into strips of wire, with these strips then cut into appropriate lengths, and then flattened. The flattened planchets would then be struck by hand and, in the case of Tsar Michael I, depicted St George on horseback on the reverse, and bear the name and titles of the Tsar on the obverse. Russian mints formally abandoned the production of Wire Money in January of 1718, as a new age of mechanisation took hold.
