Struck to the finest quality from 99.9% pure silver, the 2024 Sovereign Silver Proof is a stunning modern interpretation of the iconic St George & the Dragon motif.
First seen in 1817, adorning the Gold Sovereigns of King George III, the depiction of St George slaying the dragon is arguably the world’s most famous coin design. A work inspired by medieval legend and rooted in classical tradition, the St George & the Dragon design was created by Royal Mint engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. Employing a young Italian waiter from the hotel where he stayed as the model for St George, Pistrucci produced one of the most powerful coin designs of all time.
Highly reminiscent of the George V 1935 Silver Crown, and its art deco representation of St George & the Dragon, this outstanding release bears a compelling reinterpretation of Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece. On the obverse, we find the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Raphael Maklouf – the man who created the second decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II! A fine presentation, each coin is set within a case, set in a themed outer box, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
