An official issue of Britain’s Royal Mint, this affordable new coin honours the long life and record-breaking reign of Queen Victoria.
When Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace, in 1819, few believed she would become queen. As fate would have it, however, she moved up the line of succession and ultimately ascended the throne upon the death of her uncle, King William IV, in 1837. The last British monarch of the House of Hanover, Queen Victoria ruled for more than 63 years, becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch in the process. Britain’s political, economic and cultural transformation during her time in power was so significant that the period was dubbed the Victorian Era.
Capturing the longevity of this iconic British ruler, the imposing 38.61mm flan carries a design based on two famous sculptures – representing both the youthful Queen Victoria and ‘the Mother-Queen’ she became in the later years of her reign. A key element of the Crown Jewels, the Royal Orb is also depicted, along with a delicate lace pattern inspired by the Honiton Lace of the queen’s wedding dress. Struck to the Royal Mint’s rigorous Brilliant Uncirculated standard, each coin is set within official packaging referencing Queen Victoria’s famous Journal entries, revealing autobiographical details and the monarch’s personal tastes.
