The change took place as a result of anti-German sentiment during WWI, and the Royal Family’s desire to distance itself from its German heritage. Monarchs of the Royal House of Windsor have, therefore, reigned over Great Britain and the Commonwealth for over a century!
Although no Australian coins were issued for King Edward VIII, who abdicated less than a year after accession, Australian coinage has been issued for all four of the other Windsor monarchs – King George V, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II (Britain’s longest reigning monarch) and King Charles III.
