Formalising the long friendship between the two countries, France presented the Statue of Liberty as a gift to the USA in the 1880s. Shipped from France in 350 separate pieces in 214 crates, the reconstructed ‘Lady Liberty’ was officially unveiled in 1886. Standing 305 feet high from ground level to the torch, the figure was the tallest statue in the world when dedicated in October of that year. An American icon, and a powerful symbol of freedom, hope, and a new beginning for immigrants to the USA, the Statue of Liberty holds a tablet in her left hand, inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4 1776) – testimony to her inextricable link with American independence.
