The film follows Maverick, a gifted fighter pilot, as he confronts fierce rivalries and personal loss while trying to prove himself at the elite Top Gun school. The highest grossing film of 1986, Top Gun ultimately made over $360 million, against a budget of $13-$15 million. Firmly established in popular culture, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress in 2015.
Graced with an eye-catching full-colour design, the reverse features the iconic Top Gun logo in the centre, with a fighter jet above. The backdrop consists of a cloudy red and blue sky, with the most famous line of the film – “I feel the need…the need for speed!” – inscribed above. An official legal tender issue, the portrait of King Charles III is found upon the obverse.
