When settlers expanded into the region, it was identified the hot springs would be beneficial for recreation. Though the land was preserved for a reservation, the surrounding area was soon developed. The town became a well-known destination for wealthy and indigent health seekers. Today, the park is one of the most accessible parks for visitors and encompasses a number of hiking trails and camping areas.
