The Hot Springs National Park, located in Arkansas, was the first area designated for federal government protection. Prior to European settlement, the hot springs had been utilised as a place of peace and healing by Native American tribes for centuries. They called it the ‘Valley of Vapours’. When settlers expanded into the region, it was identified the hot springs would be beneficial for recreation. Though the land was preserved for a reservation, the surrounding area was soon developed. The town became a well-known destination for wealthy and indigent health seekers. Today, the park is one of the most accessible parks for visitors and encompasses a number of hiking trails and camping areas.
