The “Crown of the Continent,” Montana’s Glacier National Park is 4000 square km of majestic wilderness abutting the Canadian border. Established as a National Park in 1910, today it hosts over two million visitors a year. The World Heritage site is home to hundreds of lakes. Its snow-fed streams feed river systems throughout the continent. Glacier’s three mountain ranges were formed 170 million years ago. They include about 150 mountains that stand over 2400 metres tall. This spectacular topography was sculpted by glaciers, twenty-five of which remain active today. Beneath the alpine peaks, coniferous forest supports a thriving ecosystem of over a thousand species of plants and sixty different mammals, including predators rare in the mainland USA such as grizzly bears, wolverines and lynxes.
