The invaluable military, political and leadership skills Washington gained during his time in the British military prepared him for the difficult task of leading the Continental Army during the American Revolution. A Revolution war hero, Washington desired the life of a farmer; however, in 1789 he was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States. Mindful of the precedent he would be setting, Washington undertook his responsibilities and duties carefully and with vigilance, trying not to emulate any European royal court. Choosing to establish a peaceful transition in government, Washington handed the government over to John Adams after two terms of Presidency.
