Born in 1751, James Madison attended the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton, where he was a student of history and government. Prior to his election as president, he worked tirelessly to ratify the Constitution. To support his argument, he contributed to the ‘Federalist Papers’ promoting for the ratification. He is also remembered as a key author in the Bill of Rights. In 1808, when Jefferson retired, Madison was elected the fourth president. Madison’s terms were plagued with the growing tension between France and Britain. Unable to avoid ongoing targeting from the two countries, in 1812 Madison declared war against Britain, even though he knew the nation was outmatched. The war of 1812 spilled over to his second term. Late in 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed and the war finished. Madison left office three years later and retired, along with his wife Dolley, to their family home.
