The obverse is dominated by a portrait of George Washington, an affirmation of the coin’s United States legal tender status. Struck to the high standards expected from the world renowned United States Mint and finished in precious 24-carat gold.
The South Carolina coin portrays its key state symbols: The Carolina Wren, the state bird, and the Yellow Jessamine, the state flower, which are native throughout South Carolina. In 1776, colonists in a small fort built of Palmetto logs successfully defeated a British fleet attempting to capture Charleston Harbour. Since then, South Carolina has been called “The Palmetto State”.
