Featuring a not-issued-for-circulation full-colour Australian 20c distinguished by an ENVELOPE PRIVYMARK, this official Australia Post Stamp & Coin Cover marks the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the Women’s Services in WWII.
The first Australian women’s service was established in March 1941, with the formation of the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF). By the end of the conflict, more than 27,000 women had served in the WAAAF, along with more than 3,000 who served with the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS). In a bid to allow more Australian men to serve overseas, the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) was formed. The only non-medical women’s service to dispatch personnel overseas, more than 24,000 women served in the AWAS.
