A rarity of world standing, the 1930 Penny is Australia’s most desirable coin – sought after in any grade.
The 1930 Penny was born of the Great Depression. As a result of the economic downturn, demand for new coinage in Australia fell dramatically, with the Melbourne Mint largely idle during this period. There were no threepences or sixpences struck from 1929 to 1932, for example, and there were no pennies struck in 1930 – or so it was thought. It is now accepted that perhaps 3,000 pennies were produced in 1930, in the process of testing coin dies. It is thought that these coins were stored away, and ultimately released into circulation with the 1931 or 1932 Penny issue.
As it was issued for general circulation, it is to be expected that this iconic Australian rarity is seldom seen in anything other than well-worn condition. Indeed, most of the 1,500 known examples grade at Fine or lower. The coins presented here are ones of very few exceptions to the rule.
With the obverse portrait of King George V distinguished by six clear pearls and a partial centre diamond, our particular examples of the 1930 Penny are in much-better-than-usually-seen Fine to Very Fine conditions. The opportunity to own the 1930 Penny in this outstanding state of preservation naturally emerges only very occasionally.
The ultimate addition to any predecimal collection, the chance to own this great Australian rarity must not be missed. Click add to cart now!
